Lotus won 6 races out of 13, and the world title went to Jochen Rindt.

In 1970 Lotus brought out the wedge-shaped Lotus 72, and Jochen Rindt won four races in a row with it — in the Netherlands, France, Britain and Germany — having already won at Monaco in the old Lotus 49.
On 5 September Rindt was killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix. Jacky Ickx won two more races for Ferrari, in Canada and Mexico, but the United States Grand Prix was won by Rindt’s Lotus team-mate Emerson Fittipaldi — and Ickx could no longer catch Rindt. Rindt became the only posthumous World Champion, with 45 points.
