The team was founded by world champion Jack Brabham and designer Ron Tauranac. In 1966 Brabham won four races in a row in a car of his own make and became world champion — the only driver to have done so in a car bearing his own name. In 1967 his team-mate Denny Hulme was champion in a Brabham, and in both seasons the team won the Constructors’ Championship.
From 1972 the team was owned by Bernie Ecclestone, and Gordon Murray became chief designer. In 1978 the Brabham BT46B, with a fan that sucked air out from under the car, won the Swedish Grand Prix with Niki Lauda and never raced again. Nelson Piquet was world champion with Brabham in 1981 and 1983 — the second of those titles was the first ever won in a turbocharged car. The team ran its last race in the summer of 1992, in Hungary.
