Biography
Ferrari and the Nürburgring
Niki Lauda became World Champion in 1975 with Ferrari. On 1 August 1976, at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, his car crashed and caught fire; Lauda suffered severe burns but was back in the car six weeks later at the Italian Grand Prix. He lost the 1976 title to James Hunt by a single point, and in 1977 he won his second.
Comeback and a third title
In 1979 Lauda quit racing to go into aviation, but in 1982 he came back — now with McLaren — and in 1984 became champion for the third time, half a point ahead of his team-mate Alain Prost. In all, he made 171 starts and took 25 wins. Later he worked with Formula 1 teams, including Ferrari and Mercedes. Lauda died on 20 May 2019.
