British Racing Motors
British Racing Motors was conceived as a national British project — an answer to the Italian marques. The first car, with a supercharged V16 engine, entered the World Championship at the 1951 British Grand Prix but proved too complicated, and the first win did not come until 1959, when Jo Bonnier won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
In 1962 Graham Hill won four races in a BRM powered by the team’s own engine and became world champion, while the team took the Constructors’ Championship. Jackie Stewart also took his first win with BRM, at Monza in 1965. In 1971 Peter Gethin won the Italian Grand Prix at the same circuit, beating Ronnie Peterson by one hundredth of a second, and Jean-Pierre Beltoise brought the team its last win at a wet Monaco in 1972.
