Biography
A champion without a title
Stirling Moss won 16 Grands Prix but never became World Champion: four years running, from 1955 to 1958, he finished second — three times behind Juan Manuel Fangio and, in 1958, a single point behind Mike Hawthorn. He took his first win at the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree with Mercedes, beating Fangio himself by two tenths of a second.
The best of the privateers
Moss was keen to race British cars and to drive for private teams: in 1957, together with Tony Brooks, he gave Vanwall the first World Championship win for a British car; in 1958, in Rob Walker’s Cooper, he took the first win for a car with the engine in the back; and in 1961, in a private Lotus, he won at Monaco and the Nürburgring, beating the works Ferraris. In 1962 he was badly injured in a crash in a non-championship race at Goodwood and left Formula 1.
