Biography
Five titles with four makes
Juan Manuel Fangio joined the World Championship in its very first season, 1950, when he was almost 39, and won five titles — in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957 — in cars from four makes: Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Ferrari and Maserati. He began the 1954 season with Maserati and finished it with Mercedes.
A win in almost every other race
Of his 51 World Championship races, Fangio won 24 — almost every other one — started from pole 29 times and finished on the podium 35 times. One of his most famous wins is the 1957 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring: after a long pit stop he chased down and passed two Ferraris, and that win clinched his fifth title. He raced for the last time at the 1958 French Grand Prix with Maserati. Fangio died on 17 July 1995.
