How it began
The Mercedes-Benz works team made its World Championship debut at the French Grand Prix at Reims on 4 July 1954 and won straight away: Juan Manuel Fangio won from pole, with Karl Kling second. Fangio, who had joined Mercedes mid-season, became the 1954 champion and defended his title in 1955. On 16 July 1955 Stirling Moss won the British Grand Prix — the team’s only win not taken by Fangio. The works team left the championship after the 1955 season, and the next race with Mercedes listed as the constructor did not come until 2010.
The modern team is based in Brackley, seventy miles north-west of London. For the 2010 season the champion Brawn GP team was renamed Mercedes GP; Formula 1 traces this team’s entries back to 1970, through Tyrrell, BAR, Honda and Brawn GP. The power units are built separately, at Brixworth, by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.
The first years after the return
The team spent its first season, 2010, with Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, who was returning to the championship. The year brought three podiums, all for Rosberg. He also brought the first win since the return: on 15 April 2012 he won the Chinese Grand Prix, having taken the team’s first pole since its comeback the day before.
From 2013 Lewis Hamilton took Schumacher’s seat. That season Rosberg won the Monaco Grand Prix on 26 May and the British Grand Prix on 30 June, and Hamilton took his first win for Mercedes at the Hungarian Grand Prix on 28 July 2013, from pole.
Eight titles in a row
When the hybrid era began, Mercedes won eight Constructors’ Championships in a row, from 2014 to 2021, and seven Drivers’ Championships in a row, from 2014 to 2020. The 2014 season opened with Rosberg’s win at the Australian Grand Prix on 16 March. Hamilton was champion in 2014 and 2015, and Rosberg in 2016: he sealed the title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 27 November 2016 and announced his retirement from racing five days later.
Valtteri Bottas replaced him in 2017 and won the first race of his career, the Russian Grand Prix, on 30 April 2017. Hamilton was champion from 2017 to 2020. On 15 November 2020 he won the Turkish Grand Prix from sixth on the grid and sealed his seventh title that day, equalling Michael Schumacher. In 2021 the team took its eighth Constructors’ Championship; the last win of that run was the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 5 December 2021, and Bottas left the team after the season.
After the dominance
In 2022 George Russell joined from Williams as Hamilton’s team-mate. He brought the only win of that season, the São Paulo Grand Prix on 13 November 2022, starting first after winning the Saturday sprint — the first win of his career. The team went winless in 2023. Russell ended the drought at the Austrian Grand Prix on 30 June 2024; on 7 July 2024 Hamilton won his home British Grand Prix, and on 23 November 2024 Russell won in Las Vegas from pole.
After the 2024 season Hamilton moved to Ferrari. His seat went to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix on 16 March 2025, finishing fourth from sixteenth on the grid. At the Canadian Grand Prix on 15 June 2025 Russell won from pole, and Antonelli reached the podium for the first time, in third. On 5 October 2025 Russell won the Singapore Grand Prix, also from pole, and on 9 November 2025 Antonelli was second at the São Paulo Grand Prix.
People and factory
Toto Wolff joined the team in 2013 as a managing partner with a thirty per cent stake; today he is its team principal and CEO. In 2020 the ownership was restructured into equal shares held by Mercedes-Benz, Wolff himself and INEOS. The technical director is James Allison.
At Brackley, on a 60,000-square-metre site, the cars are designed, manufactured and assembled. The engine division at Brixworth has its roots in Ilmor Engineering, founded in 1984; it has been responsible for Mercedes’ Formula 1 engines since 1994 and has been wholly owned by the company since 2005. Besides the works team, Williams, McLaren and Aston Martin have all used Brixworth power units at various times.
2026 season
The team started 2026 with George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli; McLaren, Williams and Alpine also use Mercedes power units. The regulations are new, with different power units and active aerodynamics. The season opened with the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March 2026, where Russell won from pole and Antonelli finished second. A week later, on 15 March 2026, Antonelli took the first win of his career, the Chinese Grand Prix from pole, with Russell second again.
On 7 June 2026 Antonelli won the Monaco Grand Prix from pole, and on 28 June Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix, also from pole. On 6 September 2026 Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza from nineteenth on the grid, and on 13 September 2026 the Spanish Grand Prix on the new Madrid circuit.
