Biography
Stewart’s protégé
François Cevert drove for Tyrrell as team-mate to Jackie Stewart, who was grooming him as his successor. In 1971 Cevert won the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen and finished third in the championship.
Watkins Glen, 1973
In 1973 Cevert finished second six times, most often behind Stewart, and was set to lead the team after Stewart retired. On 6 October 1973, in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix, he was killed in a crash at Watkins Glen; Stewart, who had already decided to retire, did not start that race.
