Biography
From Indy to Formula 1
Mario Andretti was born in Istria and grew up in the United States, where his family moved in 1955. He won the Daytona 500 in 1967 and the Indianapolis 500 in 1969, and in Formula 1 he took pole in his very first start, the 1968 United States Grand Prix with Lotus. He took his first win at the 1971 South African Grand Prix with Ferrari.
Lotus 79
Andretti became World Champion in 1978 with Lotus, driving the ground-effect Lotus 78 and Lotus 79 and winning six races. He raced for the last time in 1982 with Ferrari; in all, he made 128 starts and took 12 wins.
