March Engineering
March was founded by Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd, and its name was put together from their initials. At its very first Grand Prix, in South Africa in 1970, five March cars started, and Jackie Stewart put one of them on pole; a month and a half later he won the Spanish Grand Prix in a March entered by Ken Tyrrell’s team.
The works team itself won twice: in 1975 Vittorio Brambilla won in Austria in a downpour — the race was stopped early, and he crashed the car after the chequered flag — and in 1976 Ronnie Peterson won at Monza. March came back to Formula 1 several times, the last in 1992. Max Mosley later served as president of the FIA, from 1993 to 2009.
