Biography
Three titles
Jackie Stewart was World Champion three times: in 1969 in a Matra run by Ken Tyrrell’s team, and in 1971 and 1973 with Tyrrell. His 27 wins stood as the Formula 1 record until 1987, when Alain Prost beat it.
Safety
Stewart fought for barriers, medical care at circuits and seat belts in an era when drivers’ deaths were accepted as part of the sport. He retired after the 1973 season and never started what would have been his hundredth race — the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, where his team-mate François Cevert was killed in qualifying. Stewart later founded the Stewart Grand Prix team.
