Biography
Lotus 72
Jochen Rindt was born in Mainz, grew up in Austria and raced under an Austrian licence. He took his first win at the 1969 United States Grand Prix with Lotus, and in 1970 he won five races, some of them in the new Lotus 72.
Posthumous champion
On 5 September 1970 Rindt was killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The points he had already scored were enough that no one caught him by the end of the season: Rindt is the only World Champion to have been awarded the title posthumously. In all, he made 60 starts, with 6 wins and 10 poles.
