Biography
The first World Champion
Giuseppe “Nino” Farina won the first race in World Championship history — the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 13 May 1950 — from pole, at the wheel of an Alfa Romeo. By the end of that season he had also become the first World Champion. In a team where Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli drove alongside him, Farina won three championship races — in Britain, Switzerland and Italy.
After the title
Farina drove for Alfa Romeo until it withdrew from the championship after the 1951 season, then spent four seasons with Ferrari, and he raced for the last time at the 1955 Belgian Grand Prix with Ferrari: he was entered in a Lancia for that year’s Italian Grand Prix but did not start. In all, he made 33 starts, with 5 wins and 19 podiums. On 30 June 1966 he was killed in a road accident on his way to the French Grand Prix.
