Biography
Two titles with Ferrari
Alberto Ascari, son of the racer Antonio Ascari, was a two-time World Champion, taking the title with Ferrari in 1952 and 1953. Across those two seasons he won nine championship races in a row, not counting the Indianapolis 500, which was part of the championship at the time. The record stood for 60 years — Sebastian Vettel equalled it in 2013, and it was broken by Max Verstappen, who won 10 races in a row in 2023.
Lancia and his last season
In 1954 Ascari moved to Lancia, spent almost the whole season waiting for its car and started races for Maserati and Ferrari in the meantime. At the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix his Lancia left the track and plunged into the harbour — he surfaced and swam clear. Four days later, on 26 May 1955, Ascari was killed while testing a Ferrari sports car at Monza. Over his career he made 32 starts and took 13 wins and 14 poles.
