In 1973 the calendar grew to fifteen races. Lotus won the Constructors’ Championship, but their drivers Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Peterson took points off each other; Peterson started from pole nine times and won four races.
Jackie Stewart won five races and became champion for the third time, sealing the title at Monza. He planned to retire after his hundredth race, the United States Grand Prix, but his team-mate François Cevert was killed in qualifying at Watkins Glen; Tyrrell withdrew from the race, and Stewart retired without taking that start.
