The 1976 season was a duel between Niki Lauda and James Hunt, who had moved to McLaren. Lauda won five of the first nine races, but on 1 August at the Nürburgring his Ferrari crashed and caught fire. Six weeks later, with his burns still unhealed, he was back in the car at Monza and finished fourth.
Hunt won six races and was also stripped of victory at the British Grand Prix. It all came down to the final race at Fuji in torrential rain: Lauda chose to retire after two laps, Hunt finished third and became champion by a single point, 69 to 68.
