Shadow Racing Cars
Shadow was founded by the American Don Nichols. The team started out in the North American Can-Am series and came to Formula 1 in 1973, with black cars and a base in England. Jean-Pierre Jarier gave it its first pole, in Argentina in 1975.
In 1977 Shadow driver Tom Pryce was killed in South Africa: at full speed he hit a marshal who was running across the track. A few months later Alan Jones gave the team its only win, at the Austrian Grand Prix. At the end of that season some of the staff left to found Arrows, and a court ruled that the first Arrows car was a copy of the Shadow. The team ran its last race in early 1980.
