In 2005 tyre changes during the race were banned, and Ferrari lost their pace. Fernando Alonso won seven races for Renault and Kimi Räikkönen also won seven for McLaren, but McLaren were often let down by reliability.
Alonso clinched the title at the Brazilian Grand Prix and, at 24, became the youngest world champion up to that point. Ferrari’s only win came at the United States Grand Prix, where problems with Michelin tyres meant only six cars took the start.
