His main rival was Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren. Häkkinen won four races, including the Belgian Grand Prix, where he passed Schumacher as they came up to lap a backmarker. The title was settled at Suzuka, where Schumacher beat Häkkinen through the pit stops. Rubens Barrichello took his first win at the German Grand Prix, having started 18th.
