In 1999 Michael Schumacher broke his leg at the British Grand Prix and missed six races, so his team-mate Eddie Irvine took up Ferrari’s fight against Mika Häkkinen — and won four races.
It all came down to the final race, in Japan: Häkkinen won and became champion for the second time, 76 points to Irvine’s 74, while Ferrari took the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 1983. At the Nürburgring Johnny Herbert gave Jackie Stewart’s team their only win.
