Benetton Formula
The Italian clothing company Benetton first sponsored other teams, then in 1986 bought Toleman and gave it its own name. With BMW engines, Gerhard Berger won the Mexican Grand Prix in the very first season, and in 1990 Nelson Piquet and Roberto Moreno finished first and second in Japan. Michael Schumacher joined the team in 1991.
Schumacher was world champion with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, and in 1995, by then with Renault engines, the team won the Constructors’ Championship. After he left for Ferrari, Benetton won only once more — Berger at Hockenheim in 1997. In 2000 the team was bought by Renault, and from 2002 it raced under the Renault name.
