Biography

Monza 1988

Gerhard Berger took his first win in Mexico in 1986 — also the first for the Benetton team. In 1988 he won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza for Ferrari, less than a month after the death of Enzo Ferrari — the only race that season not won by McLaren.

Senna’s team-mate

At Imola in 1989 Berger had a heavy crash: his car caught fire, but he escaped with burns and missed only one race. From 1990 to 1992 he drove for McLaren alongside Ayrton Senna, and he took his 10th and last win at Hockenheim in 1997 for Benetton. Berger later became a co-owner of the Toro Rosso team.
