Arrows Grand Prix International
Arrows was founded by people who had left Shadow — Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate — and its name was put together from the first letters of their surnames. A court ruled that the first car was a copy of the Shadow, and the team had to build a new one in a hurry. In the very first season Riccardo Patrese finished second in Sweden, and in 1981 he took the only pole in the team’s history, at Long Beach.
Arrows never won a single race. It came closest in Hungary in 1997: Damon Hill, the previous season’s champion, led almost the whole race, but in the final laps his car developed a hydraulic problem and he finished second. From 1991 to 1996 the team was called Footwork, and in 2002 it stopped turning up to races mid-season because of its debts.
