Road to Formula 1
He was born on 27 May 2003 in Buenos Aires. He took up karting at nine, won the Argentine championship twice and left home at 14 to race in American and European karting series. In October 2018 he won the karting event at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, and the same year he contested the last four races of Spanish Formula 4, winning the final one.
In 2019 he became Spanish Formula 4 champion in his rookie season. In 2020 he won the rookie classification of the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, and in the Formula Renault Eurocup he took two wins and finished third, the best of the rookies. In 2021 he raced in the Formula Regional European Championship for MP Motorsport and won two races, while also making his debut in LMP2 prototypes: a win in the European Le Mans Series and a start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he was the youngest driver on the grid.
Formula 3 and Formula 2
In 2022 he moved up to Formula 3 with Van Amersfoort Racing and took pole in his very first qualifying session, in Bahrain. His first win came in the sprint at Imola and his second in the sprint at Monza; he finished the season ninth. In January 2023 he joined the Williams academy and switched to MP Motorsport, winning the sprints at Silverstone and Monza and finishing fourth in the championship.
In 2024 he stepped up to Formula 2, staying with MP Motorsport. His first win in the series came in the sprint at Imola, where he passed Paul Aron at Tamburello on the last lap, and he then made the podium in two feature races in a row, in Barcelona and Spielberg. At the 2024 British Grand Prix he took to the track on a Formula 1 weekend for the first time, driving 24 laps in first practice for Williams.
Debut with Williams
From the Italian Grand Prix on 1 September 2024, Williams put him in the car for the remaining nine races of the season in place of Logan Sargeant. He became the first Argentine in the championship in 23 years, since Gastón Mazzacane, whose last Grand Prix was for Prost in 2001. At Monza he started 18th and finished 12th.
Two weeks later, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 15 September 2024, he started eighth and finished eighth — points in only his second race and the first points for an Argentine in the championship in 42 years. He made the top 10 again at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on 20 October 2024, finishing 10th. He ended the season with five points, 19th in the Drivers’ Championship.
Alpine
For 2025 Williams had signed Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, and on 9 January 2025 the team announced a multi-year deal with Alpine: Colapinto moved there as test and reserve driver. On 7 May 2025 Alpine announced that he would replace Jack Doohan from the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, initially for five rounds, alongside Pierre Gasly. He drove his first race for the team at Imola on 18 May 2025 and finished 16th.
He did not score in 2025: he came closest at the Dutch Grand Prix on 31 August with 11th place, and he was unable to start the British Grand Prix on 6 July. He finished 20th in the Drivers’ Championship. On 7 November 2025, the Friday of the São Paulo Grand Prix weekend, Alpine confirmed him as a race driver for 2026 alongside Gasly.
2026 season
In 2026 he races for Alpine with the number 43, alongside Pierre Gasly. It is the first season of the new technical regulations: power units that draw around half their output from the electrical side, active aerodynamics and 11 teams. His first points for Alpine came at the Chinese Grand Prix on 15 March 2026 with 10th place.
At the Miami Grand Prix on 3 May 2026 he started eighth and finished seventh, and at the Canadian Grand Prix on 24 May he moved up to sixth. At the British Grand Prix on 5 July he climbed from 19th on the grid to ninth. On 27 August 2026 Alpine extended his contract, keeping the Colapinto–Gasly line-up for 2027 as well. At the Italian Grand Prix on 6 September he qualified seventh and finished ninth, and at the Spanish Grand Prix on 13 September he was seventh again.
