In 1997 the title was fought out between Jacques Villeneuve in the Williams and Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari. Villeneuve won seven races and started from pole 10 times; Schumacher won five.
Going into the final race, at Jerez, Schumacher led the championship by one point; when Villeneuve attacked, Schumacher turned into his car and put himself out of the race. Villeneuve finished third to become champion, and Schumacher was excluded from the championship results for the manoeuvre. The race was won by Mika Häkkinen — his first victory.
