Sauber F1 Team
The Swiss Peter Sauber built sports prototypes — together with Mercedes, his cars won the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans — and in 1993 he took his team into Formula 1. In its very first race, in South Africa, JJ Lehto finished fifth. Kimi Räikkönen made his debut with Sauber in 2001, Felipe Massa in 2002 and Charles Leclerc in 2018.
Sauber never managed a win, but its drivers stood on the podium ten times; the best year for podiums was 2012, with four, including two second places for Sergio Pérez. In 2001 the team finished fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. From 2006 to 2009 it raced as BMW Sauber, from 2019 as Alfa Romeo, then as Kick Sauber, and since 2026 it has been the Audi works team.
