In 1964 three Britons fought for the title: Graham Hill in a BRM, Jim Clark in a Lotus and John Surtees in a Ferrari. Clark won the most races — three — but Hill was ahead going into the final round in Mexico.
In Mexico City a collision with Lorenzo Bandini knocked Hill out of contention, Clark’s engine failed on the last lap, and Surtees, whom Bandini let through into second place, became champion one point ahead of Hill, 40 to 39. Surtees remains the only World Champion in both motorcycle racing and Formula 1.
