In 1962 the title was fought out by two Britons: Graham Hill in a BRM and Jim Clark in the new Lotus 25 with its monocoque chassis. Hill won four races and Clark three, but Clark started from pole six times.
It all came down to the final race, the South African Grand Prix on 29 December: Clark was leading but retired with an oil leak, while Hill won and became champion with 42 points. BRM won the Constructors’ Championship for the first time.
