From 1958 there was also a Constructors’ Championship, and the British Vanwall team were its first winners. Stirling Moss won the opening race in Argentina in a light Cooper with the engine behind the driver; in all Moss won four races and his Vanwall team-mate Tony Brooks three.
Mike Hawthorn won only the French Grand Prix for Ferrari, but he scored in almost every race and took the title by a single point from Moss, 42 to 41. The season was overshadowed by the deaths of two Ferrari drivers — Luigi Musso at Reims and Peter Collins at the Nürburgring.
