Biography
From sports cars
Phil Hill came to Formula 1 from sports car racing, where he drove for Ferrari; he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times — in 1958, 1961 and 1962. He took his first World Championship win at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The first American champion
Hill was the first American to become World Champion. His 1961 title with Ferrari was decided at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza: Hill won the race, while his team-mate and main rival Wolfgang von Trips was killed in a crash early on. In all, he made 48 starts and took 3 wins. Phil Hill died on 28 August 2008.
