In 1959 the Cooper, with its engine behind the driver, won five championship races and the Constructors’ Championship. Jack Brabham won the Monaco and British Grands Prix, while Stirling Moss, in Rob Walker’s Cooper, took the Portuguese and Italian Grands Prix.
The title was decided at the final race — the first United States Grand Prix, at Sebring on 12 December. Brabham ran out of fuel on the last lap: he pushed his car to the finish in fourth place and became champion with 31 points. The race was won by his 22-year-old team-mate Bruce McLaren, the youngest Grand Prix winner at the time.
