New rules with 2.5-litre engines came in for 1954, and Mercedes joined the championship mid-season. Juan Manuel Fangio won the Argentine and Belgian Grands Prix for Maserati, then switched to Mercedes from the French Grand Prix and won at Reims in the new car’s very first race.
Over the season Fangio won six races and became champion for the second time with 42 points. The final round, the Spanish Grand Prix, was won by Mike Hawthorn in a Ferrari.
