With Alfa Romeo gone, the 1952 and 1953 championships were run to Formula 2 rules, and Ferrari hardly lost a race in those two years. The first race of the season, in Switzerland, was won by Piero Taruffi: Alberto Ascari skipped it to prepare for the Indianapolis 500.
Ascari then won all six remaining European races and became champion with 36 points; his team-mate Nino Farina finished second. Juan Manuel Fangio missed the season after a serious crash in a non-championship race at Monza.
