In 1951 Alfa Romeo lost to Ferrari for the first time: at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, José Froilán González gave the Italian team their first World Championship win, and Alberto Ascari then won the German and Italian Grands Prix.
The title was settled at the final race — the Spanish Grand Prix at Pedralbes. Ferrari got their tyre choice wrong, while Fangio won and became champion with 31 points to Ascari’s 25. After the season Alfa Romeo withdrew from the championship.
