With Mercedes gone, Juan Manuel Fangio moved to Ferrari, who had been given Lancia’s cars. The season became a fight between Fangio, Stirling Moss in a Maserati and Fangio’s team-mate Peter Collins.
It all came down to Monza: the steering broke on Fangio’s car, and Collins, who still had a chance of the title himself, handed him his Ferrari in the middle of the race. Fangio finished second behind Moss and became champion for the fourth time with 30 points to Moss’s 27.
