Biography
The car he gave away
In 1956 Peter Collins won the Belgian and French Grands Prix for Ferrari and, going into the final race at Monza, could still become champion. When team leader Juan Manuel Fangio’s car broke down, Collins handed him his own at a pit stop: Fangio finished second in it and won the title, while Collins ended the season third.
The final season
In 1958 Collins won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and two weeks later, on 3 August, he was killed in a crash at the Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix. He was 26.
