In 1987 Williams-Honda again won nine races: six for Nigel Mansell and three for Nelson Piquet, who retired less often and scored more regularly. In Portugal, Alain Prost took his 28th win and beat Jackie Stewart’s record.
The title was settled in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix: Mansell crashed at Suzuka, injured his back and missed the last two races, and Piquet became champion for the third time. Both of the final two races were won by Gerhard Berger in a Ferrari.
