Williams won 9 races out of 16, and the world title went to Alain Prost.
In 1986 Williams-Honda won nine races, but their drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet took points off each other, and three drivers went to the final race in Adelaide still in the title fight — the third being Alain Prost in a McLaren.
Third place would have been enough for Mansell, but on lap 64 one of his tyres exploded. Williams called Piquet in for a precautionary pit stop, and Prost won the race to become the first driver since 1960 to defend his title — 72 points to Mansell’s 70.
