McLaren won 12 races out of 16, and the world title went to Niki Lauda.
In 1984 McLaren, with TAG-Porsche engines, won twelve of the sixteen races. Their drivers Alain Prost and Niki Lauda fought out the title between themselves: Prost won seven races, Lauda five.
At the final race in Portugal Prost won, but Lauda finished second and became champion for the third time — half a point ahead of his team-mate, 72 to 71.5. Prost had received only half points for his win at Monaco: the race was stopped early in the rain, and second place there went to a rookie, Ayrton Senna, in a Toleman.
