How it began
The Silverstone team traces its history back to Eddie Jordan’s Jordan Grand Prix, which made its championship debut at the United States Grand Prix in Phoenix on 10 March 1991. That same season Michael Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut for Jordan: at the Belgian Grand Prix on 25 August 1991 he qualified seventh. Damon Hill gave the team its first win at the Belgian Grand Prix on 30 August 1998. In 1999 Heinz-Harald Frentzen won the French Grand Prix on 27 June and the Italian Grand Prix on 12 September, and the team finished third in the Constructors’ Championship. Giancarlo Fisichella took Jordan’s fourth win at the Brazilian Grand Prix on 6 April 2003.
In 2006 the same team raced as Midland, in 2007 as Spyker, and from 2008 as Force India. Its first podium under that name came at the Belgian Grand Prix on 30 August 2009: Giancarlo Fisichella started from pole and finished second. In 2016 and 2017 Force India finished fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Stroll and Racing Point
In the middle of the 2018 season the team was bought by a consortium led by Lawrence Stroll, and in the championship records today’s team counts as a separate entry from 2018. From 2019 it was called Racing Point, and one of its drivers was Lance Stroll — the owner’s son, who had made his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 2017.
The 2020 season brought Racing Point a pole and a win: on 15 November 2020 Lance Stroll started from pole at the Turkish Grand Prix, and on 6 December 2020 Sergio Pérez won the Sakhir Grand Prix. The team finished the year fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
The Aston Martin name
Since the 2021 season the team has raced as Aston Martin, a rebrand led by Lawrence Stroll. The marque had raced in the championship as a works team before: it took part in five Grands Prix in 1959 and 1960, starting with the Dutch Grand Prix on 31 May 1959, where its drivers were Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby. That team’s best results were Salvadori’s sixth places at the British and Portuguese Grands Prix in 1959; it never won a race.
The team ran its first race under the new name, the Bahrain Grand Prix on 28 March 2021, with Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll. Vettel brought the first podium: at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 6 June 2021 he started eleventh and finished second. In 2021 and 2022 the team finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship.
Alonso, Honda and Newey
In 2023 Fernando Alonso took Vettel’s seat. He finished third in his very first race for the team, the Bahrain Grand Prix on 5 March 2023, and reached the podium eight times that season, including three second places: in Monaco on 28 May, in Canada on 18 June and at Zandvoort on 27 August 2023. The team ended 2023 fifth in the Constructors’ Championship and matched that position in 2024, this time without a podium.
On 24 May 2023 Honda announced that from the 2026 season it would become Aston Martin’s works partner and supply its power units. In March 2025 Adrian Newey — designer of championship-winning cars for Williams, McLaren and Red Bull — joined the team as managing technical partner and shareholder; from his first days his focus was on the 2026 car. The team finished the 2025 season seventh.
Base and people
The headquarters is the AMR Technology Campus at Silverstone, with its own wind tunnel. Lawrence Stroll is executive chairman and controlling shareholder. In the 2025 season Andy Cowell was both CEO and team principal, and by the start of 2026 he had become chief strategy officer. Enrico Cardile heads the technical side.
Newey has led the team since the 2026 season. On 20 March 2026 Lawrence Stroll clarified in a statement that Aston Martin has no conventional team principal role: Newey is in charge of technical and strategic leadership, while a group of senior managers runs the work at the factory and at the track. On 20 August 2026 Robert Wood Johnson, a former US ambassador to the United Kingdom, bought a minority stake in the team; he joined the board as vice-chairman, while control stayed with Stroll.
2026 season
2026 is the first season of the works partnership with Honda: the power unit is the RA626H, the partnership was officially launched in Tokyo on 20 January 2026, and the team was presented on 9 February 2026. The car is the AMR26, the drivers are Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, and the reserve driver is Jak Crawford. Under the 2026 regulations about half of the power unit’s output comes from the electrical side.
The season opened with the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March 2026: Stroll finished fifteen laps down and was not classified, and Alonso retired. The first points came at the Monaco Grand Prix on 7 June 2026, where Alonso climbed from twenty-first on the grid to tenth. At Zandvoort on 23 August 2026 he finished ninth.
