The 2025 season ran to 24 rounds, from the Australian Grand Prix on 16 March to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 7 December 2025. McLaren’s Lando Norris became world champion for the first time, with 423 points and seven wins. Max Verstappen finished two points behind him, and Oscar Piastri, in third, 13 behind. Norris was the first McLaren champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

McLaren won 14 of the 24 races and took the Constructors’ Championship for the second year in a row with 833 points; Mercedes were second with 469 and Red Bull third with 451. Verstappen won the most races that season — eight; Norris and Piastri won seven each, and George Russell two. Sprints were held at six rounds: Norris and Verstappen won two each, Hamilton and Piastri one each.

Norris won the opening race and led for the first four rounds, but after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 20 April 2025 Piastri went top. He took seven wins in the first 15 races and led the Drivers’ Championship for 15 rounds in a row; after the Dutch Grand Prix on 31 August Piastri was 34 points ahead of Norris and 104 ahead of Verstappen. Norris regained the lead by winning the Mexico City Grand Prix from pole on 26 October 2025, and two weeks later he won in São Paulo too.

Verstappen’s deficit began to shrink from the Italian Grand Prix on 7 September: from there he won six of the last nine races. At the Las Vegas Grand Prix both McLarens were disqualified after the finish, and Verstappen drew level with Piastri on points, 24 behind Norris. Three drivers were still in the title fight before the final round: Norris had 408 points, Verstappen 396 and Piastri 392.

A podium in the last race was enough for Norris to take the title. Verstappen won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 7 December 2025 from pole, Piastri finished second, and Norris, who had started second, came third. The final tally: 423 points for Norris, 421 for Verstappen and 410 for Piastri. Verstappen, champion in each of the previous four seasons, ended the year with the most wins, but the title passed to Norris.

From 2025 there was no longer an extra point for the fastest lap of the race. McLaren sealed the Constructors’ Championship at the Singapore Grand Prix on 5 October 2025, with six rounds to go. Lewis Hamilton moved from Mercedes to Ferrari and at only the second round, on 22 March 2025, won the sprint in China; it remained Ferrari’s only win of the year — the team did not win a Grand Prix and finished fourth with 398 points, while Charles Leclerc and Hamilton were fifth and sixth in the Drivers’ Championship.

Both of Mercedes’ wins came from George Russell — in Canada and Singapore — and the team’s rookie Kimi Antonelli made the podium three times. Williams, with Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon, finished fifth with 137 points. Nico Hülkenberg, who had moved to Kick Sauber, finished third at the British Grand Prix on 6 July 2025 after starting 19th — the first World Championship podium of his career.

Kimi Antonelli made his debut with Mercedes, Gabriel Bortoleto with Kick Sauber and Isack Hadjar with Racing Bulls; Antonelli and Hadjar took their first podiums with third places at the Canadian Grand Prix on 15 June and the Dutch Grand Prix on 31 August 2025. Liam Lawson started the season at Red Bull, but after two rounds he swapped places with Yuki Tsunoda, who drove for Red Bull from the Japanese Grand Prix on 6 April. At Alpine Franco Colapinto replaced Jack Doohan after six rounds, and Haas fielded Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon.
