How it began

The team was founded by Gene Haas, owner of the machine tool company Haas Automation and of a NASCAR team. On 11 April 2014 the FIA granted him a licence to compete in the World Championship from the 2016 season. The headquarters was set up in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on the same site as his NASCAR team; the European base is in Banbury in the UK.

From the start the model was different from everyone else’s: the team buys the power unit, the gearbox and every part the regulations allow from Ferrari, while the Italian firm Dallara builds the chassis. Its own design office works in Maranello, next door to Ferrari. The debut came at the Australian Grand Prix on 20 March 2016: Romain Grosjean started nineteenth and finished sixth, and in Bahrain on 3 April 2016 he was fifth. The team finished its first season eighth in the Constructors’ Championship.

Grosjean and Magnussen

In 2017 Kevin Magnussen joined Grosjean, and the pair drove for the team for four seasons in a row. The best of them was 2018: fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team’s best result in its first ten seasons. At the Austrian Grand Prix on 1 July 2018 Grosjean finished fourth and Magnussen fifth — the team’s best race result at the time. The same season is also remembered for two disqualifications, in Italy and in the United States.

Then things got worse: in 2019 the team slipped to ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, and it stayed ninth in 2020. At the Bahrain Grand Prix on 29 November 2020 Grosjean crashed on the first lap, the car caught fire, and he got himself out of the flames. After that season both Grosjean and Magnussen left the team.

Reset: 2021–2023

In 2021 the team ran two rookies, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. The season brought not a single point, with twelfth place in Hungary the best result; the team was saving its effort for the 2022 car built to the new regulations. In 2022 Magnussen returned and finished fifth in the very first race, the Bahrain Grand Prix on 20 March 2022. On 11 November 2022, in qualifying for the São Paulo Grand Prix, he gave the team its first pole. Haas finished the season eighth in the Constructors’ Championship.

In 2023 Nico Hülkenberg took Schumacher’s seat. The car wore out its tyres quickly, and the team finished last in the Constructors’ Championship. On 10 January 2024 Guenther Steiner, who had run the team from day one, left his post; he was replaced by Ayao Komatsu, an engineer who had been with Haas since 2016 and was by then its director of engineering.

Under Komatsu: 2024–2025

In 2024 the team climbed to seventh in the Constructors’ Championship. On 4 July 2024 it announced a contract with Oliver Bearman for 2025, on 16 July an extension of its Ferrari power unit deal to the end of 2028, and on 25 July the signing of Esteban Ocon from Alpine. On 15 September 2024 Bearman raced for the team for the first time: at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix he stood in for Magnussen, who was serving a one-race ban, and finished tenth.

On 11 October 2024, at the Fuji circuit, a multi-year technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing was announced: Toyota was back in the championship for the first time since leaving at the end of 2009. At the end of the season Magnussen and Hülkenberg left the team.

In 2025 the team’s drivers were Ocon and Bearman, and in April Ryo Hirakawa became reserve driver. The Canadian Grand Prix on 15 June 2025 was Haas’s 200th Grand Prix. At the Mexico City Grand Prix on 26 October 2025 Bearman finished fourth, equalling the team’s best race result. Haas finished the season eighth in the Constructors’ Championship. On 4 December 2025 it was announced that from 2026 Toyota Gazoo Racing would replace MoneyGram as title partner.

2026 season

The team started 2026 as the TGR Haas F1 Team with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman, the VF-26 and a Ferrari power unit; the technical director is Andrea De Zordo. The regulations are new — power units with a bigger share of electrical power and active aerodynamics — and the championship now has eleven teams.

Bearman scored the first points of the year with seventh place at the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March 2026, and finished fifth in China on 15 March 2026. Ocon opened his account with tenth at the Japanese Grand Prix on 29 March 2026 and was ninth in Monaco on 7 June 2026. On the new Madrid circuit on 13 September 2026 Ocon finished eleventh and Bearman sixteenth.
