2024

The 2024 calendar had 24 rounds for the first time. The first two, the Bahrain Grand Prix on 2 March and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 9 March, were held on Saturdays, and the season ended with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 8 December 2024. The Chinese Grand Prix was held for the first time since 2019. Max Verstappen became world champion for the fourth year in a row with 437 points and nine wins, but seven different drivers from four teams won races that season.

Lando Norris took the first win of his career at the Miami Grand Prix on 5 May 2024 — McLaren’s first since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix — and Oscar Piastri won for the first time at the Hungarian Grand Prix on 21 July, where McLaren finished one-two. In all McLaren won six races and took the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 1998: 666 points to Ferrari’s 652. Red Bull, all of whose nine wins came from Verstappen, were third with 589 points; Sergio Pérez scored 152 points over the season and finished eighth.

Verstappen won seven of the first ten races, then went ten Grands Prix in a row without a win — from the Austrian Grand Prix on 30 June to the Mexico City Grand Prix on 27 October. In that time Norris cut the gap from 69 points to 47. Verstappen won the São Paulo Grand Prix on 3 November 2024 from 17th on the grid, and at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on 23 November he finished fifth, one place ahead of Norris, to secure the title with two rounds to go. Of the season’s six sprints, Verstappen won four, Norris and Piastri one each.

Norris finished runner-up with 374 points and Charles Leclerc third with 356: he won the Italian and United States Grands Prix, and on 26 May 2024 won his home Monaco Grand Prix for the first time. Piastri, Carlos Sainz, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton won two races each. Sainz won the Australian and Mexico City Grands Prix, Russell the Austrian and Las Vegas Grands Prix, and for Hamilton the British Grand Prix on 7 July 2024 was his first win since 2021; three weeks later he won in Belgium too.

Red Bull had led the Constructors’ Championship since the first round, but after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 15 September 2024, won by Piastri, McLaren went top and stayed there to the end of the season. After the Mexico City Grand Prix Ferrari moved up to second, and before the finale McLaren were 21 points ahead of them. In Abu Dhabi on 8 December 2024 Norris won from pole, Sainz finished second and Leclerc, who had started 19th, third. Ferrari scored more points in the race, but McLaren held on to a 14-point advantage. It was Hamilton’s last race for Mercedes: he finished fourth after starting 16th.

Three drivers made their debuts during the season. At the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on 9 March 2024 Oliver Bearman stood in for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari and finished seventh, and he later drove twice for Haas. From the Italian Grand Prix Franco Colapinto took Logan Sargeant’s seat at Williams and scored points in Baku and Austin. Jack Doohan started for Alpine at the last round, in Abu Dhabi, in place of Esteban Ocon.

The former AlphaTauri raced as RB; from the United States Grand Prix Liam Lawson took Daniel Ricciardo’s seat there and finished ninth in his first race back; Ricciardo’s last race of the season was the Singapore Grand Prix on 22 September 2024. The team that had raced as Alfa Romeo became Kick Sauber. After the season Lewis Hamilton moved from Mercedes to Ferrari and Carlos Sainz to Williams, while Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen, Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu did not race in the championship in 2025.
