Circuit of the past · Long Beach
From 1976 to 1983 the street circuit in Long Beach, California, hosted the United States Grand Prix West, the season’s second American round. Clay Regazzoni won the first race, and in eight years no driver won here twice: eight races, eight different winners.
In 1983 John Watson won here from twenty-second on the grid — no driver in championship history has won from further back. In 1980 Clay Regazzoni suffered a spinal injury in a crash at this track and never walked again. Since 1984 Long Beach has hosted races in the American CART series and later IndyCar.
