Biography
Ferrari’s idol
Gilles Villeneuve made his debut with McLaren in 1977 and moved to Ferrari later that same season. He took his first win at home in 1978, at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, and in 1979 he was runner-up, losing the title to his team-mate Jody Scheckter: in the deciding race at Monza he stayed behind him, as the team had agreed.
Zolder, 1982
Villeneuve is remembered above all for the way he drove: for his duel with René Arnoux at Dijon in 1979 and for his win at Jarama in 1981, where he held off four cars that were quicker through the corners all the way to the flag. On 8 May 1982 he was killed in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. The circuit in Montreal bears his name, and his son Jacques became World Champion in 1997.
