Circuit of the past · Estoril
The circuit at Estoril near Lisbon first hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1984 — the first in the championship since 1960 — and that race settled the title: Alain Prost won, but Niki Lauda finished second and became champion by half a point. Six months later, in April 1985, Ayrton Senna took the first win of his career here from pole, in pouring rain.
In 1993 Prost became a four-time world champion here, while the race itself was won by Michael Schumacher. In 1996 Jacques Villeneuve passed Schumacher around the outside of the final corner and went on to win. After that season the Portuguese Grand Prix dropped off the calendar and only returned in 2020 — by then at Portimão.
