Circuit of the past · Madrid
Jarama, a narrow and twisty circuit north of Madrid with a lap of about 3.4 km, hosted the Spanish Grand Prix, at first alternating with Montjuïc in Barcelona and then every season from 1976 to 1979. Graham Hill won the first race, in 1968, and Mario Andretti won here twice, in 1977 and 1978. The 1980 race was stripped of championship status: it took place at the height of the dispute between FISA and the teams.
The last Grand Prix here, in 1981, was won by Gilles Villeneuve: for almost the whole race he held off four cars that were quicker than his Ferrari through the corners, and the first five finished within 1.24 seconds.
