Circuit of the past · Reims
The circuit near Reims, by the village of Gueux, was a triangle of ordinary roads that were closed off for the race. Its long straights made it one of the fastest on the calendar, and races were decided by slipstreaming battles. In 1953 Mike Hawthorn beat Juan Manuel Fangio by one second after a long duel to take the first win of his career.
Fangio drove the last race of his career here in 1958, and in 1966 Jack Brabham won the French Grand Prix in a car of his own make — the first driver ever to do so. Grand Prix racing never came back after that, but the grandstands and pits by the road still stand today.
