Circuit of the past · Jerez de la Frontera
The circuit near Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia first hosted the Spanish Grand Prix in 1986, and that race ended in one of the closest finishes in history: Ayrton Senna beat Nigel Mansell by 0.014 seconds. The Spanish Grand Prix was held here until 1990, and the European Grand Prix in 1994 and 1997.
In 1997 Jerez hosted the championship finale. In qualifying Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen set exactly the same time, to the thousandth of a second. In the race Schumacher, leading the championship by one point, turned into Villeneuve’s car as he attacked and retired himself; Villeneuve became champion, Schumacher was excluded from the championship standings, and the race was won by Mika Häkkinen — his first win.
