Miami International Autodrome

How it began

The Miami International Autodrome is built around an American football stadium in Miami Gardens, north of the city. The track is temporary and is put together afresh for each race, but it is not a street circuit in the usual sense: it runs through car parks and service roads around the arena.

The first Miami Grand Prix took place on 8 May 2022. Charles Leclerc started from pole, and Max Verstappen won. Before that, Florida had hosted a World Championship race only once — the 1959 United States Grand Prix at Sebring.

Miami became the second American race on the calendar, after Austin, which has hosted the United States Grand Prix since 2012; Las Vegas joined them in 2023.

The track

The lap is 5.412 km long with 19 corners, and the race distance is 57 laps. The track combines fast sequences in the first sector, a slow, narrow section under a motorway flyover in the third and a long back straight with a DRS zone.

Since 2024 the Miami weekend has followed the sprint format: a short race on Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday.

Memorable races

On 7 May 2023 Verstappen won from ninth on the grid: in qualifying a red-flag stoppage had left him without a fast lap, and his team-mate Sergio Pérez took pole.

On 5 May 2024 Lando Norris took the first win of his career, helped by a safety car in the middle of the race.
